“Liquid Cooled Engine was an offsite pop up exhibition made in Yogyakarta, Indonesia during my Erasmus semester there. The inspiration came from spending most of that semester being in constant motion on a motorbike that became an almost permanent extension of my body. The artworks aimed to capture the experience of being in the biological system of the motorcycle traffic through merging the engine parts into organic structures that continually self-regenerate.

The location is a very interesting cultural third space specific of the local environment: ‘pos ronda’ or ‘pos kamling’, meaning ‘neighborhood watch’. At night, they transformed into colorful, illuminated spaces cut out of the landscape. I watched them constantly, but they were watching me too, since that’s what they’re supposed to do. Meanwhile, they were the ones sitting in the stage. Because of this phenomenon of double observation, it was a perfect exhibition venue.

The elements used for the installations and objects are a combination of engine parts and everyday items: neon green gas cylinders, fan grilles, TV antennas, and everything else I found on site. My intention was to give the impression that the exhibition had built itself.”
